A Vision for New Generations of Youth

FUTURE LEADERS envisions a world where youth are empowered to take responsibility for their own destiny by becoming leaders in their communities.

Our Mission to Create Change

FLA provides a comprehensive youth empowerment program in our public schools and in the community year-around. The FLA Way teaches young leaders to take pride in their cultural diversity, strengthen their leadership capacity, and shares the value of an education to achieve their full potential for success in their academics, career choices, and in life.

Case Statement for Mobilizing Community Action

Latinos represent the fastest growing population of youth. Nearly two of every three youth in Santa Barbara (62%) and more than one in two Ventura County youth (53%) are Latino. The share of Latinos among high school dropouts is projected to reach 36 percent in 2020 (double what it was in 1990). Only 16% of Latinos have college degrees and represent just 3.4% of the nation’s fastest growing industries – the high tech sector more commonly referred to as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mechanics (STEM).

The future development, leadership and success of California and the nation as a whole, requires effective strategies that reverse the troubling trends which have resulted in more Latino youth dropping out, susceptible to the prison industrial complex, and low wage jobs instead of into colleges, professional careers, and public leadership roles where they can make a positive impact. For 30 years, FLA has been instrumental in Latino youth not only graduating from high school, but going on to earn university undergraduate and graduate degrees and serving in professional and public leadership roles, including being among the first Latina/os to be elected into public office and serving in statewide and national leadership positions.
